With double-digit snowfall, dangerously cold temperatures, and the potential for prolonged power outages, preparation ahead of this historic winter storm is critical. Heavy snow and ice can damage power lines, trees, and roads, making travel hazardous and restoration efforts slower. Taking steps now, before conditions worsen, can help protect your family, home, and pets during extended periods without power.
- Ensure your outage kit is fully stocked with flashlights, batteries, blankets, water and non-perishable food for multiple days, medications, and a battery-powered radio.
- Charge electronic devices and power banks early.
- Protect pipes by letting faucets drip, opening cabinet doors, and knowing where your main water shutoff is.
- If you rely on medical equipment, make sure you have a backup plan and emergency contacts in place ahead of time.
- Fuel up and test backup heat sources and follow all safety guidelines. Never use grills, generators, or fuel-burning heaters indoors.
- Prepare pets and livestock with extra food, water, shelter, and warmth, and bring animals indoors whenever possible.
- Always stay clear of downed power lines and report them immediately; assume every line is energized.
