Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC) recently had the opportunity to visit the Nelson County Public Schools (NCPS) Summer School Program, where middle and high school students experienced an engaging day of career exploration and electrical safety education.
The visit introduced students to the many career paths available within the electric cooperative industry while reinforcing the importance of making safe choices around electricity.
Communications Coordinator and Community Liaison Tiffany Gordon shared how communications plays a vital role in serving member-owners and supporting the cooperative's mission. Students learned that careers in the electric industry extend far beyond linework and include communications, member services, engineering, information technology, accounting, human resources, and many other professions that help keep the cooperative operating every day.
CVEC linemen Matt Wilbun and Coty Painter provided students with an inside look at what it takes to become a lineworker, discussing the education, specialized training, and commitment required to safely build and maintain the electric system. They also highlighted the rewarding opportunities available for those interested in careers in the skilled trades.
One of the most memorable moments of the visit was the Tabletop Live Line Demonstration. Using a scaled model power distribution system and everyday props—including birds, squirrels, ladders, vehicles, tractors, and people—Matt demonstrated how electricity travels and explained the dangers associated with both overhead and underground power lines. The interactive presentation helped students understand why it is important to always stay away from downed power lines, exercise caution around electrical equipment, and know what to do if they encounter a dangerous electrical hazard.
Students also learned about the specialized flame-resistant (FR) clothing, personal protective equipment, and safety gear that lineworkers rely on every day to protect themselves while working around high-voltage electricity.
At CVEC, educating the next generation is an important part of our commitment to the communities we serve. By combining hands-on learning with career exploration, we hope to inspire future leaders while helping students develop a lifelong respect for electrical safety.
