Reliability is an important focus at CVEC. Each year, we contract with a team of specialists to inspect a portion of our utility poles for decay and insect/woodpecker damage so that we can catch those issues before they cause an outage.
Our authorized contractor, Osmose Utilities Services, Inc. performs these inspections, which include above and below ground testing to look for internal or external decay. The above ground testing includes a visual inspection and possible boring with a battery-powered drill. Below ground tests may involve hand-digging around poles approximately 1’ wide and 1.5’ deep. They also measures any defects in order to gauge the health and strength of the pole. If necessary, they will apply a remedial treatment to protect against decay and wood-destroying fungi and insects. If a pole is rejected, CVEC or a CVEC-approved contractor will be back at a later date to replace it.
Pole inspections are just one of the many ways CVEC works to maintaining a safe and reliable system for our members.
