Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced the appointment of Gary Wood, President and CEO of Firefly Fiber Broadband and Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), to the Virginia Broadband Advisory Council. This appointment comes on the heels of Wood’s August election as Chair of the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Broadband Cooperatives (VMDABC).
The Broadband Advisory Council plays a critical role in shaping statewide broadband strategy and advising the Governor and General Assembly on policies that support high-speed internet expansion, digital equity, and infrastructure investment. Wood’s appointment recognizes both his leadership in broadband deployment and Firefly’s rapid progress bringing world-class fiber service to unserved and underserved communities across Virginia.
“We are honored to see Gary’s expertise and dedication recognized at the state level,” said George Goin, CVEC Board of Directors Chairman. “His perspective, rooted in the cooperative commitment to community service and rural connectivity, will be a valuable asset to the Commonwealth.”
Under Wood’s leadership, Firefly has grown into one of Virginia’s most successful rural broadband initiatives, delivering reliable, gigabit-speed fiber internet to thousands of homes and businesses. His appointment to the Broadband Advisory Council underscores his continued commitment to ensuring every unserved Virginian has access to the connectivity they need to thrive.
