As interest in residential solar energy continues to grow, some CVEC members have reported being approached by door-to-door solar sales representatives making promises that may not tell the whole story.
CVEC supports members' right to explore solar energy options and will work with any homeowner or installer who follows Virginia's net metering requirements for electric cooperatives. Before signing a contract, however, members should take time to understand how solar generation works and carefully review any claims made by sales representatives.
One common sales pitch is that installing solar panels will eliminate your electric bill entirely. Members connected to CVEC's system will continue to receive a monthly bill, regardless of the size of their solar installation. At a minimum, members are responsible for basic metering and billing charges that support the infrastructure and services required to maintain electric service to their home.
Solar generation can help reduce energy purchased from the cooperative, but factors such as weather, seasonal sunlight levels, household energy use, and system size all affect how much electricity a solar array produces. Most homes continue to rely on the electric grid when solar production is low, such as at night or during cloudy weather.
CVEC encourages members to:
- Research installers before signing a contract.
- Request a detailed estimate of expected energy production and savings.
- Carefully review financing terms and guarantees.
- Be cautious of claims that seem too good to be true.
- Contact CVEC before installation to understand net metering requirements and how solar may affect their electric service.
Solar can be a valuable option for some members, but making an informed decision is essential. CVEC is committed to providing accurate information and working with homeowners and installers to ensure solar systems are safely interconnected and comply with all applicable regulations.
